Atiu Island

Atiu is a unique geological phenomenon.
It is an atoll that uplifted.
The center of this small island is no longer a lagoon, but a fertile landmass.
The fertile land is enclosed by the former coral reef, a one-mile-wide jungle-covered ring of razor-sharp coral rock locally called“ makatea.”
As a result Atiu’s 5 villages cluster in the center rather than line the treacherous 60 foot high razor-sharp cliffs of makatea.
Atiu is about 4 x 4 miles and has fewer than 600 people.
Just a few years ago, 2, 000 people lived here, but modern-day jobs are scarce and many immigrated. Only 11 people here have full-time jobs.
Atiu is famous for its varied birdlife.

The Atiu Island population of 569 is divided into 5 villages that radiate out from the center of the island on a flat-topped central plateau.
At the edge of the plateau stands the Atiu Villas, Atiu’s most developed and top vacation destination.
Rarotonga is the Capital of the 15 islands and lies between Fiji and Tahiti in the South Pacific. Surrounding the plateau is a ring of taro water gardens and then the jungle-clad makatea( fossil coral reef).
Notched into the cliffs of makatea are over 28 beaches untouched and almost unvisited except by those seeking a beautiful, quiet, and secluded spot.

The makatea is clad with jungle and riddled with caves.
The dark of one cave, called Anataketake, is the home of the indigenous bird called the Kopka.
An excursion to this cave is conducted frequently and provides a real experience to nature lovers and bushwalkers.
There are many other caves and in fact, you could spend a week exploring underground caves and find even more caves to explore.
The raised central plateau is where they all live.
It is cooler and breezier.
Outside the central populated plateau is many nature walks through the lush tropical jungle.
Being the land of the birds they also specialize in guided bird tours where Birdman George explains the fauna and flora on Atiu as well as Atiu’s part in the recovery program for a back from the brink Rarotongan bird called the Kakerori and for the colorful and endangered Rimatara lorikeet called the Kura.
Atiu also produces distinctive coffee.
There are two producers.
One,‘ Atiu Coffee’ is known as a gourmet coffee in many parts of the world.
The other‘ Atiu Island Coffee’ is produced by Mata Arai in the Atiu traditional method of roasting in coconut cream over an open fire.
Take Mata’s s tour and learn how to process your own coffee and enjoy fire-roasted coffee with coconut cream and pikelets.
Most people visiting Atiu stay for two or three-night and wish they stayed for more. Although Atiu has many activities to do, it is also a very relaxing island. This is mainly due to the slow pace of life and the friendly and personal nature of the local people.

Cannibalism

Ask any Atiuan today if his ancestors were cannibals and he will probably say No.
However, the written record speaks otherwise.
Artisans were fierce warriors and terrorized the nearby islands.
It was common to demean your enemies after fighting and beating them by then eating them.
This was considered the ultimate insult.
A lot has been said against the missionaries for what they did to the freedom-loving people of Atiu.
But what the missionaries definitely have going for them is that a visitor no longer needs to fear being eaten by the Atiuans anymore.
Think about it and praise god.
